$3 billion investment in social housing and $470 million to upgrade homes
Project Overview
The Australian Government is investing $2 billion as part of its Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan to deliver around 6,500 social housing homes in NSW by June 2012. On top of this, the NSW Government is investing $1 billion to deliver an additional 3,000 homes. This investment is already having a positive impact on communities by securing jobs across NSW.
The Australian Government has also allocated $130 million for the periods 2008/09 and 2009/10 to reduce the backlog of maintenance and upgrade 31,000 social housing homes. The NSW Government will supplement this by
bringing forward $200 million and Housing NSW will contribute $140 million from existing budget for 2009/10. This is reducing wait times for maintenance and repairs and ensuring social housing homes are brought up to a consistent maintenance standard.
This is a unique opportunity for the Australian and NSW Governments, local government, Housing NSW, community housing providers, social housing residents and applicants, builders, architects and everyone involved in housing. The combined Australian Government and NSW Government investment in social housing will secure thousands of jobs and apprenticeships in the building and related industries and provide more social housing for people in need.
